To be frank, I’m not a fan of so-called fat-burning pills or supplements. You know the type — those that promise to melt away your body fat, regardless of what you eat and regardless of your exercise regimen. Largely, they’re a waste of time, money and energy. Plus, most fat-burning supplements and pills don’t have easy-to-find listings of common side effects and drug interactions — you’re taking a gamble each time you take a fat-burning pill unless you already know how your body reacts to the pills’ ingredients.
Fast forward to today, I was doing some research and stumbled on this article about belly-fat reduction with probiotics. I’ve taken probiotic supplements before, and many people eat yogurt with active cultures to help improve their digestive health. So, I was a bit intrigued by the possibility.
The study: linking specific bacteria with tummy-fat loss
According to a study published in the first quarter of 2010, some researchers from Japan tested the effects of probiotics and weight loss. According to the trial, the bacteria, Lactobacillus gasseri (SBT2055), produced positive results in terms of stomach-fat reduction, reduced weight, and a reduced BMI for subjects who were given a fermented milk concoction containing this group of bacteria over the course of 12 weeks.
Now, the bad news, if you can call it that, is that your Activia yogurt, or probably even your probiotic capsults you have in your cupboard don’t likely contain Lactobacillus gasseri. So, you’re not going to see tummy-fat reduction by bulking up on yogurt with active cultures. However, the possibilities of a probiotic, which can easily be captured in supplement form, containing bacteria that will help ‘melt’ away tummy fat, will help lower your BMI, and will help you lose weight… that’s a fantastic discovery.
Shedding belly fat without the pills and supplements
While this finding is significant in the realm of weight and fat loss, it doesn’t look like you can go out and buy Lactobacillus gasseri supplements at this time. Honestly, if you’re trying to shed excess or stubborn belly fat, it’s probably better this way, anyway. Getting rid of your belly fat shouldn’t be something that you attack with a special fat-burning pill or some magic edible fat-burning supplement. Sure, they may help, but if you want to uncover a flatter stomach, and keep it flat, it’s important that you make lifestyle changes instead of seeking a solution in a bottle.
Things as simple as making smart grocery shopping decisions and implementing an effective exercise routine, even if you don’t have time for the gym can make a significant impact on your belly fat issue and especially your overall health.
I’m not saying that Lactobacillus gasseri supplements would be a bad thing for those with a propensity towards obesity, or that any probiotics weight-loss pill or supplement would be a bad thing. However, those things aren’t a reality today, but making smart lifestyle choices are a viable option for tummy fat loss today. What’s more is that these lifestyle changes do work if you’re willing to put them to work for you.
